Cainazzo is a cute, young thief, escaped and accidental hero who, together with baker Roman Romulus, lives intensely the five days of Milan insurrection against the Austrians. In fact, from 18th to 22nd March 1848 he is first seduced by a rich countess, then he helps a child to be born, then participates in the revolt, builds barricades, suffers a violent beating and assists the reprisals of the Austrians. At the end, though, the friend Romolo was shot for killing a ‘revolutionary’ who had raped a girl. After the party of victory, it all seems to come back as before in the relationship between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie.
